MEASURING TECHNOLOGY AND SYSTEMS

Monitoring of track components

The track component video monitoring system records images of the rail surface, the rail fasteners and the tie conditions.

The side view track component video monitoring system records images of the gauge side rail head area and the rail web area, and the rail fasteners.

The head check video monitoring system records high resolution images of the gauge side rail head area.

By applying real time pattern recognition algorithms to the recorded images, the track component video monitoring systems provide information about visible anomalies such as missing fasteners, wheel burns, rail surface defects, cracked ties, head checks, etc.

The basic track component video monitoring system consists of two line scan cameras, each monitoring one rail, lighting equipment, and recording and analysis computers. Each camera samples the track longitudinally, i.e. in 2 mm increments with a resolution of 2 mm x 2 mm. By longitudinally appending the lines recorded by the line scan camera, the system produces high resolution images of the rail surface area, the fastener elements, and the tie areas around the left and the right rails.

The basic system can be upgraded to monitor not only the rail and tie area around the rail foot but also monitor an area of +/– 750mm around each rail, thus recording also images of tie ends and track centers.

The head check video monitoring system records high resolution images of the gauge side rail head area, with a resolution of 0.5mm x 0.1mm. Utilizing two cameras with designated lighting, optimized for illuminating the running edge of the rail, allows detecting and analyzing head check problem areas.
