FUNDAMENTALS

WHY track renewal or track laying?

Permanent way is made up of several key components: rails, sleepers, rail fastenings, ballast bed, and substructure. The track must guide trains safely against derailment, offer comfortable travel, and ensure high availability.

The main task of permanent way components is to transfer dynamic forces from train traffic to the subsoil in a uniform manner. The superstructure, substructure, and subsoil form a technical-physical unit. The proper functioning of the system depends on the condition of the individual components, such as rails and sleepers, and the quality of their installation.

The materials of the track components are exposed to high stresses and therefore wear. The decisive factors here are the forces and accelerations from operations as well as the quality of the track panel assembly including the formation. Geographical conditions and the weather also have an impact on service life.

Safety and cost-effectiveness make it necessary to exchange damaged components

Damaged components must be replaced in good time to avoid high follow-up costs. The focus here is on a long service life for the entire system. In many cases, an increase in operating capacity also requires larger superstructure materials. The installation of improved, innovative materials (e.g. under sleeper pads) can also aid in improving track quality.

When working, disruption to operations should be avoided as far as possible, which means setting up a small number of construction sites for short periods of time. High-quality construction and maintenance ensures the availability of permanent way for as long as possible.

Due to the current upturn in the railway system, new track laying projects are being implemented in many places to increase capacity.

Both track renewal and track laying require a great deal of labour and machinery. The use of mechanized work methods can significantly reduce the time and effort involved. In addition, higher and more homogeneous initial qualities can be achieved.

Plasser & Theurer offers robust high-capacity continuous-action machines for track renewal and track laying.

Integrated material logistics includes the supply and removal of sleepers and rails via the newly laid or existing track.

Alternatively, compact cyclic-action renewal systems are also available.
