MTW 100 in the South Tyrolean Alps

The Italian province Trentino, South Tyrol, lies between Lake Garda in the south and the Brenner Pass in the north. The transport company Trentino Trasporti operates a four-axle motor tower car, type MTW 100.

A line which seems simple at first sight with 22 stations and 15 halts poses some challenges. The 1,000 mm gauge railway line passes over numerous bridges and viaducts with a maximum gradient of 50 ‰ and tight curve radii of only 80 m.

Therefore, this MTW 100 is fitted with specially adapted equipment.

Two 2-axled bogies with hydrostatic drive assure the necessary traction.

The multipurpose railway loading crane with a separate cabin can be used for setting catenary poles, for loading jobs and also – when fitted with the appropriate accessory – for the installation of catenary. A winch holder for a catenary wire drum is located in front of the crane.

Furthermore, the MTW is equipped with an elevating work platform for a range of uses, a contact wire and carrying cable holding device and a contact wire observation device.

This MTW 100 is a useful addition to the fleet of well-proven Plasser & Theurer machines at Trentino Trasporti.
