Applications at a glance

We differentiate between two main fields of application shaping the machines’ basic specification.

The technologically correct method of installation is crucial.

In many cases, the assembly methods used are still simple and include mobile ladders, simple auxiliary vehicles, platform wagons and work platforms. This equipment, however, does not enable all areas of the overhead line system to be reached and, to a certain extent, neglects operational safety.

Overhead line construction

The overhead line construction process involves separate work sequences that need to be coordinated. Decisions on these work sequences can already be taken when overhead line systems are planned.

Moreover, TSI, EN and UIC regulations and local standards on new lines and upgraded lines shape the overhead line system (see Tension in every phase).

The first measures to be implemented include preparing the mast foundations and setting the masts. Then, fasteners and cantilevers are mounted; supply cables, catenary and contact wire are installed and droppers are mounted. A long service life of the overhead line, however, depends not only on the quality of the materials used.

The right method of installation plays a major role as it contributes to achieving the best possible initial quality. Scientific studies provide a valuable basis for decision making (for further information see Eisenbahntechnische Rundschau (ETR), March 2014, pp. 60, “Fahrdrahtwelligkeit und mechanische Modellierung des Verlegevorgangs” (“Contact wire ripple and mechanical modelling of the installation process”), author: Ao. Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Rudolf Heuer).

Sometimes, the old overhead line must be removed before the new line can be installed. Depending on their configuration, the machines deployed can also be used for efficient dismantling and maintenance.

Overhead line maintenance

In most cases, time windows available for track possessions and works to be performed are short. In addition to this, breakdowns cause operations to be planned on short notice.

Therefore, high speeds during transfer travel are crucial. The key to cost-efficient maintenance of the overhead line is machines that enable flexible application and meet a wide range of requirements.

The key to cost-efficient maintenance of the overhead line is machines that enable flexible application and meet a wide range of requirements.

On the following pages, we focus on overhead line construction and the requirements of overhead line maintenance. From the chapter Examples from practical operation shows the versatility of machines which are used not only for construction projects and regular maintenance but also fast intervention when incidents occur.
